The Mono Project is an Open Source implementation of the various ECMA and .NET framework technologies for Unix and Windows. The project includes compilers for C# 1.0 and 2.0 and the associated class libraries.
Mono is available on a variety of operating systems and architectures which helps you move your .NET code anywhere: Linux, MacOS X, Solaris, BSD Unix and Windows. Architectures supported include x86, Itanium, S390/s390x mainframes, MIPS, PowerPC, ARM family, x86-64, Alpha and SPARC.
The Mono runtime is self-contained and can be bundled with applications that require a small .NET runtime (4 megabytes for the VM, plus the core assemblies).
At this point it has a complete implementation of the core libraries, Windows.Forms, System.Drawing, System.DirectoryServices, System.XML, System.Data and the associated data providers and ASP.NET.
Mono includes a cross platform GUI library called Gtk# that works on Windows, Linux and OS/X.
Support for the 2.0 APIs is partially available.
The Mono Migration Analizer tool (Moma) can assist developers in identifying the portability issues that their application would encounter (dependencies on 2.0 APIs that are not completed, special portability issues, and features that are not available in cross-platform applications). |
